| Takini is the only survivor of a smallpox epidemic that kills his whole family. The Lakota boy is discovered by Lakota hunters. Right away the Lakota people realize the boy is gifted with special spiritual powers from Wakan Tanka. Takini is adopted by the great chief, Sitting Bull. He lives through the early 1870's with the threat of attack by United States Bluecoats. With his special horse and faithful dog, Takini has many close calls with enemy tribes and soldiers. Wakan Tanka's messenger, a red tailed hawk, is there to lead him from the brink of death even when the boy is spotted by General Custer's Seventy Calvary. Children reading TAKINI will walk in the moccasins of boy living in the momentous 1870's. |
