In early 1700 before the horse came to the U.S. northern plains, the Blackfeet people used
dogs to drag their belongings. "Dog Days" were hard. There was little to eat and little time
to enjoy life. Most time had to be used to obtain food and hides for survival. Om-kas-toe
and his twin sister witness the coming of elkdog, their name for the horse. Elkdog will
change the Blackfeet people forever. As a boy of eight, Om-kas-toe rescues an injured
baby raven. He and his sister nurse the wounded bird back to good health. The two
children cherish their new pet. They discover the amazing intellignece of this winged
creature. They choose the name "Wisebird" for their new companion. The Blackfeet people
are astounded by the power the children have over this wild bird. On a day when
Om-kas-toe is surrounded by enemy warriors with no apparent way to escape, Wisebird
appears and dumbfounds the enemy allowing the boy to make his escape. Rich in history
and the changes coming to Indian life on the northern plains, OM-KAS-TOE is a wonderful
book for any family's library.
