The Sheepeater Shoshoni people hated the killing, kidnapping, and stealing that happened in
the valleys and on the plains. They chose to live far from the trouble. They built their
wicki-ups in the high drainages on mountain sides under large pine and spruce trees. They
hunted many game animals, and were known for their special ability to hunt the elusive
bighorn sheep which roam high above timberline. They were also known for discovering how
to make a bow from a ram's horn. The ram's horn bow was the finest ever made by early
people. Moho Wat and his family are first to discover how to fashion a bow from a ram's
horn.
On a hunt with his father Moho Wat is attacked by a mountain lion and loses his lefthand. As
a result of shear determination, Moho Wat learns to do everything a boy with two hands can
do including shoot a bow and arrow with deadly accuracy. When a young girl is captured by
enemy warriors, Moho Wat takes it upon himself to rescue her right from under the noses of
hundreds of enemy people. MOHO WAT: SHEEPEATER BOY ATTEMPTS A RESCUE,
winner of the Wyoming Children's Book Award, is a great adventure and full of inspirational
accomlishments of a young boy who would not give up after losing his hand.
